Frequently Asked Questions
Who can submit to The Unsilenced Archive?
We welcome submissions from emerging, unpublished, and underrepresented writers across South Africa and the African continent, including those in the diaspora. We are dedicated to discovering voices that have been overlooked by traditional publishing systems.
What genres do you accept?
We publish poetry, prose, essays, narrative nonfiction & fiction, hybrid and experimental writing. We are committed to a diverse range of literary forms that challenge the status quo and celebrate various kinds of storytelling.
How is the selection process conducted?
Our editorial team conducts a rigorous review process that prioritises literary merit, cultural significance, depth, and the unique voice of the author. We believe every submission deserves a fair and thoughtful evaluation. Our evaluation includes feedback for longlisted writers, which is uncommon in traditional publishing spaces.Â
Is there a fee to submit my work?
No, there is no submission fee. We aim to maintain accessibility, and we understand that adding a fee may reduce this. Our team covers the costs of our editorial and production processes. You are welcome to make donations to help us in the preservation of our literary archive and the support of our writers.
How can I stay updated on the archive?
Join our newsletter to receive announcements about new publications, anthology editions, and opportunities for writers. We believe in building a community that celebrates the stories we preserve.
